Montclair, NJ: The Montclair State University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College 74-40 tonight at Panzer Athletic Center in NJAC conference action. The Red Hawks improve to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 4-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
MSU opened up the game with back-to-back baskets from Taylor Brown and Kim Calloway before the Roadrunners got on the board with a pair of free throws from
Tia Solomon.
Cherie Smedile tied the game 4-4 with a layup before MSU would push the lead to 10-5 with just over four minutes to play.
Alie Wickersheim and Solomon sank back-to-back baskets to cut the Red Hawk lead to one 10-9 with 2:19 on the clock before MSU would take an 11-2 run into the second quarter for their first double-digit lead of the game 21-11 with 7:02 left in the second. Their biggest lead of the half came in the final 38 seconds of action when Calloway hit a three-pointer as MSU went up 34-18 at halftime.
In the third quarter MSU led 39-18 before Ramapo went on an 8-2 run which included two three-pointers from
Jenna Harsh as they cut the lead to 41-26. MSU would push the lead to 26 with the final basket of the third, a jumper from Julia Sutton heading into the fourth quarter up 57-31. MSU held the Roadrunners to nine points in the final quarter of action while they added 17 points to their total for the 74-40 conference victory. MSU outscored Ramapo in the paint 36-14 while the Roadrunners held a slight edge in second chance points 10-8.
Two Red Hawks scored in double figures in the game as Alex McKinnon tallied 14 points while Domonique Wirsing finished 5-6 from the field for 11 points. Wirsing included a team high three blocks, five rebounds and four steals. Taylor Brown and Calloway each scored nine points while Brown led the team with four assists and five steals. The Red Hawks shot 44% (29-65) from the field, 27% (6-22) from the three-point line and 62% (10-16) from the free throw line.
Harsh and
Samantha Rinaldi each recorded eight points in the game to lead the Roadrunners. Harsh added five rebounds and one steal while Rinaldi added three rebounds and two steals. Wickersheim collected a team high 12 rebounds and posted seven points along with two blocks and one steal while Smedile and Solomon each contributed with six points. The Roadrunners shot 21% (13-62) from the field, 15% (3-20) from the three-point line and 61% (11-18) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, December 1st when they host Stockton University at 3pm in NJAC action.
