Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team won the Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament 72-65 over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn today at the Bradley Center. The Roadrunners remain undefeated at 4-0 overall while the Bears now stand at 1-2 on the season.
The two teams played a close game while the Roadrunners held the Bears to just five points in the second quarter, which proved to be a key factor in the game as St. Joseph's out scored the Roadrunners in the final two quarters.
Tia Solomon led the Roadrunners with a double-double 16 points and 14 rebounds while
Jessica Repasy tallied a team high 20 points and added seven rebounds.
Amber Sagan contributed with ten points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals while
Samantha Rinaldi collected nine points on the day. The Roadrunner defense forced the Bears to turnover the ball 16 times in the game, which led to 13 points for Ramapo. The Bears also attempted 34 three-pointers in the game and made 12.
The Bears had four players score in double figures in the game while they were led by Victoria Porcasi who tallied 16 points including four three-pointers along with four assists and one steal. Lauren Quesada posted 14 points and six rebounds while Jamie Provino scored 12 points, all three-pointers. Kelly O'Donnell added ten points and eight rebounds along with three assists and two steals. The team shot 35% (25-70) from the field, 35% (12-34) from the three-point line and 37% (3-8) from the free throw line.
Ramapo jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter on a three-pointer from Repasy before the Bears hit back-to-back three-pointers of their own to take an 11-10 lead with 4:25 on the clock. Sagan and Repasy each sank a basket while Solomon added a free throw for a 15-11 score with less than three minutes left to play. Just over a minute later the Bears would tie the game on a three-pointer from Provino before Ramapo ended the first quarter on a 7-3 run for a 24-20 lead. The Roadrunners would hold the Bears to just five points in the second quarter and ended the quarter on a 15-2 run that put them up 41-25 heading into halftime.
The Bears would battle back in the final two quarters as they shrunk the Roadrunner lead to seven with less than six minutes left to play in the third on a lay up from O'Donnell. Ramapo answered right back as
Cara Faulkner hit a layup and made a free throw on the and-one play for a ten-point lead 47-37. Ramapo made it 54-41 with 1:13 on the clock on a made basket from Repasy before the Bears got the final basket of the quarter, a jumper from Quesada. Ramapo would see their lead shrink to three in the final quarter of action when the Bears went on an 8-2 run to come within three 63-60 on a three-pointer from Quesada with 1:42 left in the game. Ramapo would answer with four straight free throws from Rinaldi and Harsh, stretching the lead back to seven 67-60 with 1:05 on the clock. Caitlyn Staab and O'Donnell would hit a layup and three-pointer respectively 69-64 with 31 seconds left before Sagan put the Roadrunners up six 71-65 in the final 23 seconds of the game on a pair of free throws. Rinaldi scored the final point for Ramapo sinking the front end of a two-shot foul for the 72-65 score.
The Roadrunners return to action Tuesday, November 20th when they travel to Rutgers-Newark University for a NJAC conference matchup beginning at 6pm.
