Mahwah, NJ: The #7 ranked, and #1 seeded Ramapo College men's basketball team defeated the Profs of Rowan University in the semi-final match-up of the NJAC Championship Tournament tonight, 110-101 to advance to the championship match-up on Friday. With the victory the Roadrunners improve to 24-2 overall and will face the #3 seeded Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Friday, February 24th at 7pm at the Bill.
Behind a double-double from
Christopher Moseley and a second half surge from the Roadrunners, Ramapo gets the win and earns the chance to take the conference title looking for the fourth NJAC Championship crown under the direction of Head Coach
Chuck McBreen.
Moseley collected 24 points and ten rebounds and shot 6-10 in the win including 11-14 from the charity stripe as the team combined for 29-62 (47%) from the field.
Sultan Aminu added 20 points and
Patrick Peterson collected 18 as
Thomas Bonacum chipped in 16 points on the night. Bonacum completed a double-double with ten rebounds of his own and
Nick Stanek collected 16 points in the win. Moseley grabbed three steals and
Josh Ford and Moseley each dished out five assists.
For the first five-plus minutes of the game the two teams traded baskets coming to a 16-16 tie, before Josh Borrelli drained a three, Nick DePersia nailed down a layup and Borrelli hit a jumper to take a 23-16 lead and force a Ramapo time out. Ramapo strung together six points out of the timeout to come within one, 22-23, but a jumper from Jeff Haddock would put the Profs ahead by three again, 25-22 with 10:12 to play. Moseley and Bonacum would connect baskets to give Ramapo a 27-25 lead but Tomas Malmsjo would respond with a long shot of his own to put Rowan on top, 28-27. The lead would change again as Moseley sank a jumper putting Ramapo ahead 32-28, this time forcing a Rowan timeout. Over the next four minutes it would be Ramapo who kept the lead with Bonacum draining a three to go up 45-40 and Aminu adding a jumper to take a seven-point, 47-40 advantage with 2:39 to play in the half. The Profs did not sit back connecting a 10-0 run to close out the half and take a 50-47 lead at the buzzer. DaRon Curry would drain the seventh three in the half for the Profs to take the three-point advantage. N. DePersia led the Profs with 12 points and Malmsjo netted eight as the team shot a combined 17-35 (49%). Moseley collected 15 points, Aminu added 12 and Bonacum finished the first 20 minutes of play with 11 points of his own. Ramapo shot a combined 16-34 (47%).
The Profs started the second half the same way they ended the first as N. DePersia drained a three-point goal in the opening seconds. The Roadrunners would work to close the gap, coming to a 57-57 tie at 16:15 with a basket from Stanek off a dish from Moseley. Just under a minute later, Peterson would sink a long shot to put Ramapo ahead, 62-57. Down the opposite end of the court, a missed Rowan shot would give the ball back to Ramapo where Peterson would capitalize on an and-one play to go up, 63-57. Two free throws from Aminu capped a 12-0 Ramapo run (65-57) with 14:33 on the clock. The Roadrunners would string together a min 4-0 run and then a 7-0 run eventually coming to a 15-point, 79-64 lead with a three from Peterson (10:46). Ramapo would continue to string together runs working to a 19-point lead with just under six minutes to go with two free throws from Ford and down the stretch Rowan strung together a 6-0 run and a 5-0 run to close the gap to 85-95 with 2:40 to go. A three from Jordan Sintras with 1:25 on the clock put the Profs within seven, 92-99 and yet another long ball from the Profs closed the gap to 95-101. With 0:12 on the clock N. DePersia sank anther three to put the Profs within six but good free throws from Ramapo in the final seconds would give Ramapo the 110-101 victory. Peterson sank 18 points in the final half as Ramapo combined for 13-28 (46%). Rob DePersia led the Profs with 14 points in the half as the team hit 17-42 (41%).
N. DePersia finished on top of all Profs with 22 points and R. DePersia added 18 as the team shot 34-77 (44%) from the field. R. DePersia dished out six assists in the loss as the team sank 17 three-point goals on the night.
