Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament went to the Rams of Suffolk University today as they defeated the Roadrunner Women's Basketball team, 60-55 in the championship game. Ramapo falls to 2-1 overall while Suffolk improves to 2-1.
Alexis Hackett, the tournament Most Valuable Player, finished the day with a double-double which included 15 points and 14 rebounds. She shot 6-15 from the floor as the team combined hitting 20-60 (33%). Georgia Bourikas scored 14 points and Jenni-Rose DiCecco netted 11. Hackett dished out five assists and DiCecco grabbed three steals.
In the first quarter, the Roadrunners fell behind 13-16 after a back-and-forth opening ten minutes of play.
Bridgette Buckalew led the Roadrunners with four points as the team hit 5-13 (39%) from the floor. Suffolk went 5-13 (39%) from the floor as well but hit two three-point goals and four free throws to finish on top. Suffolk was led by Hackett with six points. The Rams would sneak ahead 26-21 at the halftime buzzer as Bourikas collected four points. The team shot 4-17 (24%) with Hackett pulling down five rebounds.
Jenna Harsh and
Samantha Rinaldi each nailed down three points for Ramapo as the team hit 3-15 (20%). For the half, Buckalew and Rinaldi collected six points each and the team combined for 8-28 (29%). Bourikas and Hackett each netted nine for the Rams as the team shot 9-30 (30%).
At the start of the third quarter the visiting Rams would control the offensive play as they worked to a double-digit (32-21) advantage just one minute in with a long shot from Bourikas. The Roadrunners would begin to chip away with 6:04 to play as
Alie Wickersheim netted a two-point goal. They would come within three at 2:21 with a three from Buckalew but the Rams answered to close out the half with 9-0 run to lead 48-36 at the buzzer. The Rams shot 8-19 (42%) in the quarter with Jenni-Rose DiCecco leading with nine points. Buckalew led the Roadrunners with three. In the final quarter the Roadrunners made a push in the final minutes but were unable to push past the Rams falling short, 55-60. Alexandra Nagri scored five for the Rams in the final quarter and the team went 3-11 (27%). Rinaldi led the Roadrunners with six points as the team combined hitting 6-14 (43%).
Rinaldi finished the day with 14 points and Buckalew netted 11 as the team went 21-55 (38%). Buckalew dished out five assists and grabbed three steals. Harsh pulled down seven rebounds.
Victoria Porcasi led the Bears of St. Joseph's to a 94-52 win over the Cardinals of York College today in the consolation match-up of the tip-off tournament. Porcasi finished the game with 22 points and Kelly O'Donnell added 17 as Catherine Drago collected 14. The team hit 31-71 (44%) from the floor. O'Donnell finished the day with a double-double adding 12 rebounds. Kellie O'Neill dished out eight assists in the win.
St. Joseph's took a 36-17 lead at halftime. Three players led the team with eight points a piece, Drago, O'Donnell and Porcasi. O'Neill led the team with seven assists and seven rebounds. The team shot 38% from the field in the first half (15-39) and 44% from the free throw line (4-9). York was led by Allison Ahmed who put in five points in the first half while Karen Bellamy grabbed a team high seven rebounds. The team shot 17% from the field (7-40) and 37% (3-8) from the free throw line.
In the second half of play, the Bears took complete control working to a 94-52 advantage at the final buzzer. Behind 14 points from Porcasi and nine from O'Donnell the team went 16-32 (44%) from the floor. Ahmed led the Cardinals with 12 second half points and Bellamy added ten.
Bellamy wrapped up the game with a double-double including 14 points and ten boards while Ahmed wrapped up the game 17. Ahmed also finished the game with nine rebounds and NyKeisha Paul grabbed five steals.
