Union, NJ: The Kean University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College 70-52 tonight in NJAC action. The Cougars improve to 13-6 overall, 10-2 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners fall to 7-13 overall, 2-11 in the conference.
De'Mean Bond posted a double-double of 21 points and 22 rebounds including four blocks to lead the Cougars over the Roadrunners. Marajiah Bacon added 17 points and Kenya Adams added 13 points of her own. The Cougars shot 42% (29-69) from the field, 20% (2-10) from the three-point line and 76% (10-13) from the free throw line.
Kellie Lane led the Roadrunners with 14 points and three assists while
Jina Crawford,
Samantha Rinaldi and
Bintou Berete all contributed with six points.
Shelby Ringer and
Bridgette Buckalew each collected five points and a team high six rebounds while Buckalew led the team with three steals. The Roadrunners shot 34% (19-55) from the field, 33% (3-9) from the three-point line and 50% (11-22) from the free throw line.
Lane got the Roadrunners on the board with a three-pointer to start the game before Kean went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 lead. Ramapo then went on an 8-0 run of their own when Lane sank her second three-pointer to start the run. Berete capped it off with a made basket off a pass from Rinaldi to take an 11-6 lead. The Cougars matched the Roadrunners with an 8-0 run of their own as Bond put Kean up three 14-11 with a made basket in the final seconds of first quarter. In the second quarter the two teams traded baskets and the game was tied three times before Kean went on a 6-0 run to take a 26-20 lead with 5:11 left on the clock. Ramapo cut the lead to seven before Bond started a 7-0 run that extended their lead to 39-25. Lane scored the final points of the first half with two made free throws as Kean led 39-27 at halftime.
At the start of the third quarter, Kean used a 12-0 run to take a 51-27 lead. Rinaldi started an 8-0 run for the Roadrunners that was capped off by a pair of free throws from Lane cutting the Kean lead to 51-35 with 3:22 left to play in the third quarter. Kean led 55-39 heading into the final quarter. Kean led by double digits the final ten minutes of play as Ramapo could only cut the lead down to 14.
Kelly McNulty capped off a 5-0 run with a layup with 5:40 left in the game cutting the lead to 46-60. Bacon started an 8-0 as Ruby Asabor put the Cougars up 68-46 with 2:46 left to play in the game. Rinaldi and
Tia Solomon sank back-to-back shots for the Roadrunners (50-68) before Vreeland made Kean's final basket of the game.
Jenna Harsh recorded the final basket of the game off a steal in the final seconds for the Roadrunners as Kean came away with a 70-52 NJAC win.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, February 1st when they host NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University at 5:30pm.
