Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team split a NJAC doubleheader with visiting Rutgers Camden University today. The Scarlet Raptors slipped past Ramapo in game one with a 5-4 win in ten innings while the Roadrunners came back in game two with a 5-0 win in six innings.
Game 1: The Roadrunners got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 1-0 lead before the Scarlet Raptors came back with three unearned runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Ramapo's
Grace Brennan tied the game at three with a two-run home run over the left-center field fence 3-3.
Neither team could score a run in the seventh pushing the game into extra innings and the international tiebreaker. In the top of the ninth, Dannie Dinsfriend came up big for the Scarlet Raptors with a pinch-hit RBI single to right field to take a 4-3 lead. The Roadrunners came back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth 4-4.
Ally Spellman was placed on second base and moved over by
Danielle Saporito's sac bunt. Haper Patsko then drove her home with a sac fly to center field to extend the game for the Roadrunners. Rutgers Camden pushed the eventual game winning run across in the tenth inning when Lindsay Day ripped a double to left field allowing Brittany Scott to score 5-4. The Scarlet Raptors held Ramapo in the bottom of the tenth to earn the NJAC road win.
Scott (13-12) earned the win on the mound for Rutgers Camden in a complete game. She struck out five, walked four and surrendered five hits.
Katrina Buzckowski started for Ramapo and earned a no decision working the first 8.1 innings. She struck out seven and walked none while scattered nine hits.
Erin Fitzsimmons (0-3) came in for relief earning the loss, surrendering just one hit and one run.
Game 2: Ramapo got on the board early in the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Daniele Saporito laced a double into the right-center field gap before she stole third base. She later came home on
Mikayla Melendez's single to center field for a 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners added another run in the fourth when
Nicole Mahoney smacked her team leading sixth home run of the year over the right-center field wall for a 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning Ramapo added three runs on four hits extending their lead 5-0. Spellman and Saporito hit back-to-back singles before Patsko drove home Spellman with a double. Saporito came home on the play on a throwing error from the outfield. Patsko later scored on a wild pitch for the 5-0 lead.
Brizek and the Roadrunners held Rutgers Camden in the top of the sixth before the game was called due to unsafe conditions by the umpires. Brizek (12-3) let up only one hit in the game with two strikeouts and two walks. Saporito finished 2-3 with two runs scored while six other Roadrunners recorded one hit in the game.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday at NJAC rival the College of New Jersey for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm.
