Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team played host to the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark tonight in a thrilling New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up at the Bradley Center where the Scarlet Raiders came out with a slim, 95-94 double overtime victory. With the win Rutgers Newark improves to 19-6 overall and 14-4 in conference play while the Roadrunners fall to 16-9, 12-6 in the conference. Ramapo earns the #4 seed in the post-season tournament and hosts TCNJ on Saturday evening at 6pm.
It was a dramatic finish in the conference match-up as double-overtime play ended in Rutgers Newark's favor by one point. Jordan McDaniel recorded a commanding double-double for Rutgers Newark with 44 points and ten rebounds while John Snow netted 30 points of his own in the win. The team hit 30-61 (49%) in the win as Snow pulled down seven boards of his own. For Ramapo, four Roadrunners hit double-digit figures with
Thomas Bonacum leading the way with 23 points.
Frank Nock added 19 and
Christopher Moseley collected 17 while
Cory Soanes chipped in 12.
James Long dished-out four assists on the night and Soanes led in rebounds with nine.
In the first half of play, the Roadrunners held a slight advantage over Rutgers Newark, 41-40 behind 14 points from Nock and 12 from Bonacum. The team shot a combined 15-31 (48%) behind Rutgers Newark's 15-25 (60%). Rutgers Newark was led by McDaniel with 19 points and Snow with 12. It was an evenly played half as the two teams traded baskets throughout with the score being tied on eight occasions and nine lead changes. The Scarlet Raiders took their biggest lead of four points, 12-8, just four minutes into the game with a three-point basket from Snow before Ramapo regained the lead with a long shot from Bonacum with 13:09 on the clock. The Roadrunners pushed to their biggest lead of four with just 5:00 to play after Bonacum dropped in two shots from the charity stripe. Nock put Ramapo up by four again under a minute later with a two point goal, 36-32. The lead changed two more times down the stretch with Ramapo leading by just one point at the halftime buzzer.
It was all Ramapo at the start of the second half as the Roadrunners worked to a seven-point lead, 49-42 after Long drained a three with 17:21 on the clock. The 8-0 run to get to the seven-point advantage was sparked by a jumper from
Josh Ford. The Scarlet Raiders quickly responded with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game for the ninth time, this time at 49 all.
Cory Soanes would put the Roadrunners ahead by five, 54-49 but the game's tenth tie (54-54) came at 11:59 with a two-point goal from McDaniel. Over the next few minutes the teams traded baskets again, a highlight coming at 9:26 with a dunk from Moseley to go up, 61-58. It was again a seesaw battle for the next eight-plus minutes and with 1:22 to go, Nock hit a jumper to tie the game once again (72-72), a score that stood until the buzzer forcing overtime. Moseley led Ramapo in the second half with ten points and the team hit a combined 12-31 (39%) as McDaniel sank 13 points for the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers Newark went 10-23 (44%).
In the overtime period, Moseley opened the scoring and sparked a 6-0 run with a jump shot followed by two free throws to go up, 76-72, before Long sank two of his own from the charity stripe to give Ramapo the 78-72 lead with 2:23 to play. Free throws from Snow and a jumper from McDaniel, split by the back end of a two shot foul from Moseley would put Ramapo in the lead by just three points, 79-76 with just over one minute to play. But with a steal from Tyler Ofray with 34 seconds to play and a foul on a three-point opportunity, Rutgers Newark would tie the game at 79 with all three baskets from Snow. A last second shot from Ramapo would fall short forcing a second overtime period. Moseley led in the period with five points and Snow led the Scarlet Raiders with five. Both teams hit just one field goal with Ramapo hitting 1-2 and Rutgers Newark, 1-7.
McDaniel started off the second overtime period nailing down a three-point goal and Soanes responded with two points to trail, 81-82. Two points from McDaniel would follow before a deep three from Snow would put Rutgers Newark on top, 87-81 with 3:11 on the clock. Bonacum closed the gap to three points, 84-87 as he capitalized on an and-one play before free throws over the next minute gave the Scarlet Raiders a 91-84 edge over Ramapo. Down the stretch, Ramapo would come within three points at 1:07 with free throws from Bonacum, and with 43 seconds to go, Soanes would put Ramapo within one, 92-93 with two free throws of his own. A steal by Nock would put the ball in Ramapo's hands with 38 seconds to go and Soanes would drop one in off a rebound to go up 94-93 with 25 seconds left. Out of a timeout, McDaniel grabbed two points for the Scarlet Raiders and a last second shot from Ramapo bounced around the rim and fell short giving Rutgers Newark the 95-94 conference win. McDaniel led Rutgers Newark with ten points in the period as the team went 4-6 (67%) from the field. Ramapo was led by Bonacum with seven points as the team shot a combined 3-12 (25%).
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, February 20th in the first round of the 2015-2016 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at 6pm. As the #4 seed they take on #5 TCNJ. It's a MAROON OUT. All Ramapo students dressed in maroon will get FREE admission into the game.
