Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team, behind 16 points each from
Kellie Lane and
Shelby Ringer, earned a 80-37 victory tonight over Yeshiva University in their 2016 season opener at the Bradley Center. Ramapo opens the season at 1-0 overall while Yeshiva opens the season with the loss at 0-1.
Lane and Ringer each contributed 16 points to the win as they combined hitting 10-15 from the field. Ringer nailed down four three-point goals and
Bridgette Buckalew led the team in assists with ten. Lane,
Tia Solomon and
Kelly McNulty each pulled down six boards as the team went 28-56 (50%) on the night.
Ramapo opened to a fast start with an 8-0 run, sparked by
Jina Crawford, before Yeshiva got on the board with a two-point goal from Laura Betesh. The first quarter would be played out the same way as Ramapo pushed to a 12-point lead at 4:18 with a jumper from Lane, and their biggest lead of the quarter at the buzzer when a basket from Buckalew would give the Roadrunners a 23-5 advantage. To start the second quarter, Ramapo would take a 27-5 lead after a min-run that was capped off by a free throw from Lane. Just under four minutes later, Ringer would drain a three to go up 30-9. Back-to-back-to-back threes from Ringer, with two free throws between falling for Yeshiva, would put Ramapo ahead, 39-13 forcing a Yeshiva timeout. Ramapo would end the half with a 50-20 advantage behind 16 points each from Lane and Ringer. The team hit 18-32 (56%) as Buckalew dished out nine assists. Yeshiva was led by Michal Alge with nine points as the team shot 7-23 (30%) from the field.
The two teams traded baskets at the start of the second half with Yeshiva hitting the front end of a two shot foul with 5:19 left in the quarter to post a 27-58 score on the board. The remainder of the quarter would go the same way until with 1:40 to go,
Samantha Rinaldi hit a three and
Jillian Artrip hit a layup to close out a five-point run to lead by 34, 67-33 at the buzzer. In the final ten minutes of play, the Roadrunners continued to stay on top as they out lasted the Maccabees, 80-37.
Jenna Harsh collected nine points in the half and Ramapo shot 10-24 (29%). Alge led the Maccabees with eight points in the half as the team was held to just three field goals hitting 3-24 (10%).
Yeshiva was led by Alge with 17 points hitting 3-5 from the field and 11-14 from the free throw line. The team went 10-47 (21%) and Betesh collected four steals and two assists.
Ramapo returns to action this weekend when they host John Jay College in the opening match-up of the 2016 Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament on Friday, November 18th at 7:30pm.
