Mahwah, NJ: The #4 seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island and the #2 seeded Pioneers of William Paterson earned victories today to advance to tomorrow's final game of the weekend of the 2016 ECAC DIII Men's Soccer Championship Tournament. CSI defeated the top seeded Roadrunners, 1-0, while the Pioneers dropped the Greyhounds in penalty kicks, 3-1.
In the first game of the day, the College of Staten Island upset the #1 seeded Ramapo College Roadrunners, 1-0 to improve to 12-7-2 overall and advance to tomorrow's noon match-up against the Pioneers. Ramapo ends the season at 10-5-3 overall.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first in the game when Ali Fares capitalized on a penalty kick at the 13:53 minute mark. The score would hold until the halftime buzzer where Ramapo held an advantage in shots at 7-5.
Ryan Sprague made one save in net for the Roadrunners as CSI's Jake Foeldes collected three of his own in the half. The Roadrunners earned four corner kicks in the half and the Dolphins tallied three.
In the second half, the Roadrunners again held a slight advantage in shots at 4-3 but they were unable to capitalize as the last 45 minutes went scoreless and the Dolphins upset the top-seeded Roadrunners earning the 1-0 shutout win. Sprague made one save in the second half and Foeldes also added two saves.
Sprague finished the game with two saves as the Roadrunners out shot CSI on the day, 11-8. Foeldes finished the win with five saves and no goals against.
Game two went to William Paterson as they defeated Moravian in a penalty shoot out (3-1) after 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. Both teams had prime opportunities in the first half to get a point up on the scoreboard but both were held scoreless. Moravian out shot the Pioneers 10-6 as Bryan Yaskowski made three saves in net for the Greyhounds. Kyle Quigley made five saves for the Pioneers including a one-on-one save with a Moravian forward with just under three minutes to go in the half. Moravian earned five corner kicks in the half and William Paterson collected two.
In the second, and in both overtime periods, the teams played an even match as Moravian out shot the Pioneers by a slim, 14-13. Quigley would finish the game with ten total saves and Yaskowski made ten of his own.
William Paterson would advance as they defeated the Greyhounds in penalty kicks, 3-1.
The two winners will face off at noon tomorrow at the Athletic Center.
