Mahwah, NJ: The Lady Lions of Penn State-Harrisburg defeated the Panthers of Old Westbury, 74-57 to earn the 2015 Roadrunner Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament crown in Mahwah. With the victory the Lady Lions improve to 3-1 overall. Old Westbury falls to 1-1. In the consolation match-up, Ramapo defeated the College of St. Elizabeth, 72-46 earning their first win of the season at 1-0. St. Elizabeth falls to 0-2.
Penn-State was led by Jasmine Yanich who recorded 14 points shooting 5-10 from the field as the team hit 26-63 (41%). Brittany Ulrich posted 13 points and Kaitlyn Carmo sank ten while Becca Bailey dished out a team leading four assists. Old Westbury was led by Crystal Barnes who sank 20 points and Jasmine Robinson and Tori Bellings who each contributed 11. The team shot a combined 26-65 (40%) in the loss.
At the start of the game Penn-State Harrisburg quickly jumped out to a ten-point 19-9 lead with a jump shot from Ulrich and continued to climb as Ulrich drained another jumper to pull ahead 21-9. The team finished the quarter with a 26-15 lead. Penn-State shot 9-16 (56%) while Old Westbury was held to just seven field goals hitting 7-18 (39%). In the remainder of the half, Penn-State continued to control the offensive game climbing to their biggest lead of 19 with 2:33 to play when Carmo drained a jump shot to pull ahead, 38-19. The Lions held a 43-27 lead at the halftime buzzer behind 12 points from Yanich and ten from Ulrich. The team hit 16-34 (47%) from the field while Old Westbury went 12-36 (33%). Tori Bellings led Old Westbury with nine points in the half.
Penn State-Harrisburg controlled the third quarter hanging onto their double-digit lead but Old Westbury fought in the final 1:37 when a free throw from Robinson sparked a 5-0 run to bring the Panthers within 13, 42-55 at the buzzer. Old Westbury scored the first basket of the final period to come within 11, 44-55, but Penn-State took control again and closed out the game with the 74-57 earning the crown.
In the first game of the day, Ramapo posted a 72-46 win over the Eagles from the College of St. Elizabeth behind 16 points from
Jina Crawford. With the win, Ramapo improves to 1-3 on the year. St. Elizabeth falls to 0-2.
In the consolation match-up, the Roadrunners jumped ahead to a 20-14 lead after the first quarter behind six points from
Kellie Lane. Jasmine Poole led the Eagles with eight points as the team shot 3-16 (19%) from the field. The Roadrunners hit 9-19 (47%) in the quarter. Ramapo would go on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter before St. Elizabeth finally got on the board with 5:25 to go with the front end of a two shot foul from Marylane Gutierrez to close the gap, 26-15. The Roadrunners closed out the half with a 10-6 run to stay on top, 36-21 heading into the intermission. Ramapo went 13-35 (37%) in the half behind 12 points from
Jina Crawford. CSE was led by Poole with eight points as the team was held to just five baskets hitting 5-31 (16%).
The Roadrunners outscored the Eagles, 10-14 in the third quarter to hang onto their lead, 50-31 after shooting a combined 6-18 (33%). Lane contributed six points to lead Ramapo while Danesha Triplett led the Eagles with five. The team shot 2-14 (14%) from the field. In the final quarter, Ramapo pushed to extend their lead to 28, 67-39, with 2:44 to go in the game. Two free throws from Lane put Ramapo on top by their biggest lead and in the final minutes, the Roadrunners closed out the game with a 72-46 advantage earing their first win of the season. Crawford collected a team leading 16 points on the day and Lane finished with 14 as the team shot a combined 26-65 (40%).
Bridgette Buckalew dished out five assists while grabbing five steals in the win. Triplett led the Eagles with 11 points as the team went 12-59 (20%) in the loss. Ashley Pledger dished out six assists and Triplett pulled down 11 rebounds.
