RAMAPO BATTLES BACK TO DEFEAT DREW, 12-9

Box Score Mahwah, NJ:  Rookie Kyle Skoog drove in four runs as the Ramapo College baseball team defeated Drew University this afternoon at Jeff Maund Field, 12-9. The Roadrunners now stand at 18-12-1 overall while the Rangers fall to 13-17.

Senior Jose Garcia led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk and stole second base before Skoog ripped a single to right field, to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Chris Werr then drove home sophomore Joe Venturino with a sac fly to right field for Ramapo's second run of the inning, 2-0.

Drew tied the game in the top of the second inning, 2-2. With two outs, the bases were loaded for Steve Kowlaski, who ripped a single down the right field line. Richie Poland and Mike Scarzafava each scored. Ramapo scored one run in the bottom of the second, 3-2, while the Rangers once again tied the game in the top of the third with one run of their own, 3-3. The Roadrunners broke open the game in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs on four hits to take, 8-3 lead.

Sophomore Ian Osterman led off the inning with a walk before he advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following one out, junior Scott Peschiani laced a double to right field on a 1-2 pitch, driving home Osterman. Sophomore Scott Paulus was hit by a pitch before sophomore Garrett Luna drove home Peschiani with a single to left field. Garcia then singled home Paulus with two outs before Skoog ripped a triple to plate the final two runs of the inning.

Each team scored one run a piece in the fourth inning, pushing the Ramapo lead to, 9-4. In the fifth inning, Drew scored three runs on two hits to come within two, 9-7. The Rangers scored all their runs in the fifth with two outs. Edoardo D'Alessio walked before Scarzafava reached on a throwing error, allowing D'Alessio to score. Kowalski punched a single through the left side of the infield, driving home Scarzafava before Pat Lydon singled to center field, allowing Marc Cohen to touch home plate.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Rangers scored one run as Scarzafava scored when Jim Mereyles drove him home with a single, to come within one, 9-8, before Drew tied the game in the top of the eighth inning, 9-9. Poland led off with a walk before he came around to score on a single up the middle by Cohen.

Ramapo took back the lead in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs on four hits. Garcia led off with a double before Skoog beat out an infield single and Garcia came around to score on a throwing error for the eventual game winning run, 10-9. With two outs, Peschiani drove home Skoog with a single before Paulus drove home rookie pinch runner DeAngelis, 12-9.

Mark Doyle (3-1) earned the win in relief for the Roadrunners. He struck out one, walked none and only allowed one hit in two innings of work. Skoog led the team at the plate, he was 4-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Garcia was 3-4 with three runs scored and one RBI while Peschiani was 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Paulus was perfect at the plate. He collected three hits on three at-bats with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday when they travel to the University of Scranton for a 3:30pm game.
