KEAN SWEEPS RAMAPO IN NJAC ACTION

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Union, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team fell to NJAC rival #8 Kean University today at Jim Hynes Stadium, 9-4, in game one and, 7-3, in game two. The Cougars improve to 25-8 overall, 10-4 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 18-11-1 overall, 6-7-1 in the conference.

In game one, Ramapo scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a, 2-0 lead. Jose Garcia led off with a double down the left field line before Scott Shields beat out a bunt single. Ian Osterman then ripped a double to right field, plating Garcia and Shields.

Kean got one run back in the bottom of the second inning before they took a, 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ramapo came back to score two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Chris Werr drove home Garcia and Shields with a single through the left side of the infield, 5-4.

The Cougars added one run in the fifth and three runs in the eighth, extending their lead to, 9-4. Kean held Ramapo to just three hits in the final three at-bats. Chris Amato (2-2) earned the win on the mound for the Cougars. He surrendered four hits and struck out three while walking one.

Kevin Lee (3-2) took the loss for the Roadrunners. He struck out two and walked three while he scattered eight hits over 4.1 innings of work. Mark Doyle came in for relief, working the final 3.2 innings. He struck out two and walked three while surrendering only one hit.

In game two, Kean scored in the first, second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead. In the first, Joe O'Connor walked with the bases loaded before an infield ground out scored the second run for the Cougars, 2-0. Kean added one run in the second before they scored the eventual game winning runs in the third inning. Andy Lopez led off with a double before O'Connor sent a home run over the right field wall for a 5-0 lead. The Cougars extended their lead to, 7-0, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Ramapo would avoid being shutout, scoring three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Joe Venturino singled with one out before Scott Paulus walked. Garrett Luna drove home Venturino with a double before Garcia ripped a triple to right field with two outs, scoring Paulus and Luna. Kean would get the final out on a ground out to end the game.

Tom Portesy (2-3) took the loss for the Roadrunners. He walked four and hit one while giving up two runs in .1 innings of work.

Ramapo collected 11 hits in the game. Garcia finished the game 3-5 with two RBI while Osterman and Werr each went 2-4. Luna finished 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI while Venturino and Paulus each collected one hit.

For Kean, Matt Mantione (4-2) fired a complete game. He struck out seven and walked four while giving up 11 hits. O'Connor led the team at the plate, going 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

The Roadrunners return to action on Monday, April 21st when they host Drew University in a non-conference game starting at 3:30pm.
