Box Score Newark, NJ: The Rutgers-Newark University baseball team came back in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Ramapo, 3-2. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 10-19, 3-8 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners fall to 17-9 overall, 5-5-1 in the conference.
Mike Murry knocked in the first run of the game for the Scarlet Raiders before Jimmy Napolitano came around to score off a single from Chas Bohannon for a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Ramapo got one run back in the top of the sixth inning to come within one, 1-2.
Scott Shields and
Ian Osterman walked before they both moved up on
Chris Werr's single to left field.
Scott Peschiani then drove home Shields with a sac fly to center field. Ramapo tied the game in the seventh inning on a RBI single to center field from
Joe Venturino as
John Capuano scored.
The Scarlet Raiders would score the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with no outs to take the game, 3-2. Cote walked to lead off the inning before moving up to second on a sacrifice. He moved to third on a wild pitch before Ryan MacFarlane drove a single into right field, plating Jose Cote for the winning run.
Jose Garcia, Venturino, Werr and
Ryan Rinsky each collected a hit for the Roadrunners.
Mark Doyle (2-1) took the loss for Ramapo while
Nicholas Thorgersen started for the Roadrunners. He went 7.1 innings on the mound, striking out eight and walking three in the no-decision.
The Roadrunners and Scarlet Raiders return to action in Mahwah, NJ tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm to complete the home-and-home series.
