Box Score Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College men's basketball team wrapped up the 2013-2014 season tonight with a tough, 61-81 loss to the Pioneers of William Paterson University at the Bradley Center. With the loss the Roadrunners finish the season at 9-16 overall, and 6-12 in the conference. William Paterson improves to 20-5 overall and 14-4 in the conference, and is headed to the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship that commences on Saturday, February 22nd.
Sandy Burgos led the Pioneers in the final regular season match-up of the season. He collected 21 points hitting 8-16 from the field. Javae King-Gilchrist collected a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds, while Nick Smith and Jaques Conceicao added 14 and ten points respectively. William Paterson shot 28-57 (49%) in the win.
The two teams traded baskets for most of the first half of play, where the score was tied on three occasions, and the lead changed just two times. William Paterson opened the game with a basket from Burgos, before
Jermaine Emanuel hit back-to-back jump shots, followed by a basket from
Joshua Daniell, to put Ramapo ahead 6-2. The Roadrunners held the lead until the seventh minute of play, when a long three from Burgos put the Pioneers on top, 13-11, with 12:28 on the clock. William Paterson would hold the lead for the remainder of the half, working to a double-digit, ten-point advantage, with a three-point goal from Smith with 21 seconds to play in the half. William Paterson held a 37-27 lead at the halftime buzzer, behind 11 points from Smith. King-Gilchrist added eight to the first half as the team combined hitting 12-26 (46%), ahead of Ramapo's 9-25 (36%).
Jermaine Emanuel led the Roadrunners with eight points in the half.
To start the second half Ramapo cut the lead to three, 38-43, with an 11-4 run. Emanuel and
Tyler Barnes each sank a three-pointer for the Roadrunners during the run before WPU scored seven straight points to regain a ten point lead, 48-38, on a jumper from King-Gilchrist with 13:34 on the clock. Ramapo cut the lead to five, 45-50, on a pair of free throws from Emanuel before WPU started to pull away with 7:15 left to play in the game. Turrell McClendon hit a basket to take a 13 point lead, 63-50, before WPU took their biggest lead of the game, 77-53, with 2:49 on the clock.
Jermaine Dunkins scored two three-pointers in the final 2:25, while
Alex DeCandia scored the final basket of the game with 24 seconds on the clock, as WPU came away with the, 81-61, victory.
Emanuel led the team with 19 points and three assists while Nock and Barnes each scored nine of their own. Hicks scored six points and grabbed a team high seven rebounds. The Roadrunners shot 34% (17-50) in the game and 66% (20-30) on the free throw line. Ramapo forced 12 WPU turnovers which accounted for 11 points for the Roadrunners.
