Box Score Mahwah, NJ: The #5/13 Ramapo College baseball team extended their win streak to 12 games with a 5-4 come from behind win over visiting Stevens Institute of Technology. The Roadrunners improve to 14-1 overall while the Ducks fall to 11-8.
Stevens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Ramapo scored one run each in the bottom of the first and second innings to come within one, 2-3. In the bottom of the first, senior
Dave Jacob led off with an infield single and stole second before an infield ground out moved him to third base. Rookie
Scott Paulus ripped a double to center field to drive in Jacob, 1-3. In the bottom of the second, sophomore
Dan McEldowney laced a double down the right field line as sophomore
Zach Carroll came around to score to come within one, 2-3. Carroll walked and stole second earlier in the inning.
The Ducks added one more run in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead as Mike Donavan recorded an RBI single. In the fourth, rookie
Brandon Berger plated McEldowney with a sacrifice fly to center field, 3-4 before Ramapo would tie the game in the seventh inning. Berger walked to lead off the inning after a seven pitch at-bat before senior
Christian Spurr singled through the left side of the infield. Following an infield ground out, which moved both runner's up one base, rookie
Joe Venturino hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Berger to cross home plate with the game tying run, 4-4.
In the top of the ninth,
Ryan Rinsky was behind the plate for Ramapo on defense. The Ducks recorded back to back walks but both base runners were caught stealing for the first two outs of the inning. The final out of the ninth was an infield ground out, setting up Ramapo's game walk off win in the bottom of the ninth.
With one out, Spurr ripped a double to the left center field gap and advanced to third when the defense had trouble getting the ball back into the infield. The next two Roadrunners, Paulus and sophomore
Chris Werr, were intentionally walked to load the bases. Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Carroll then ripped a two-strike pitch to deep left field falling between the outfielder and the left field wall, allowing Spurr to touch home plate with the game winning run, 5-4.
Ramapo starting pitcher
Tom Portesy worked the first 2.1 innings of the game, striking out five and walking one. He gave up four runs, three earned.
Kyle Doerr scattered two hits over 6.0 innings of work, as he struck out four and walked three.
Jimmy Knight (2-0) worked the final two outs of the game, inducing a ground out to end the 9th, earning the win in relief.
Jacob led the team at the plate, going 3-5 with one run scored. Spurr, Paulus and McEldowney all recorded two hits a piece.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they host NJAC rival William Paterson University at 3:30pm.
