PJ Cerreto struck out 14 while yielding just six hits in a complete-game 6-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rutgers-Newark in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The workhorse right-hander threw 143 pitches to improve to 7-1 on the season while helping the Roadrunners (24-7, NJAC 7-4) run their winning streak to 10 games – including six straight in NJAC play. The Scarlet Raiders (14-15, NJAC 4-7) lost for the fifth time in their last six outings.
Junior designated hitter
Matthew Hancock went three for four with RBI singles in the first and third innings and a sacrifice fly in the ninth to pace Ramapo's 10-hit attack.
Senior rightfielder
Joseph Somma delivered a pair of doubles, including a 2-out, 2-run shot down the right field line in the fifth which boosted the Roadrunner lead to 5-0.
Freshman infielder Matt Goldberg was the only Raider with two hits – notching doubles in the third and fifth innings.
Ramapo got on the board in the first inning with one run. Hancock drilled a single to left field allowing
Dave Jacob to score from second base. Jacob walked to lead off the inning. They added another run in the third inning as
Marco Carolla singled and stole second before Hancock drove him home with a two-out single to center field for a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Somma doubled before moving to third on
Lee Rozins' sacrifice bunt before he scored on a wild pitch to go up 3-0. In the fifth inning, the Roadrunners took a 5-0 lead as Somma ripped a double allowing
Christian Spurr and
Dan Moreno to touch home plate. Spurr and Moreno ripped back to back singles to start the inning.
Rutgers-Newark's lone run came in the sixth on a lead-off single by designated hitter Mike Ciaramello, a wild pitch and a 1-out RBI single through the right side of the infield by Tim Miller, 5-1. Ramapo got one back in the ninth, extending their lead to 6-1 with Hanock's sacrifice line out to centerfield as Carolla came across to score.
The teams battle again of Friday with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch set on Jeff Maund Field on Ramapo's campus in Mahwah.
