Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team defeated NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University today, 4-3 at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners improve to 24-7 and 7-5 in the conference while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 19-11, 9-3.
Ramapo scored one run in the bottom of the first inning when
Dan Moreno singled to first base as
Rob Dimperio crossed home plate on a throwing error by the Scarlet Raiders. Dimperio reached base on a single up the middle before advancing to second on a pass ball.
The Scarlet Raiders tied the game in the fifth inning with an RBI single to left field by Mike Ciaramello before Ramapo took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the hitting.
Lee Rozins reached on a fielder's choice and stole second with two outs before
Kevin Knox drilled a single up the middle to pick up the RBI.
Rutgers-Newark got one back in the seventh with an RBI single through the right side by Tim Miller as Patrick Reitemeyer scored on the play. Ramapo scored two runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. Driscoll walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rozins before Knox singled to left field to put runner's at the corners with one out. Dimperio walked and Spurr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded allowing Driscoll to score before Knox scored on a fielder's choice by Moreno.
In the eighth, Rutgers-Newark got one run back on a wild pitch to come within one run, 4-3. In the top of the ninth with one out the Scarlet Raider's worked a walk before Ramapo starter
Travis Zilg induced a 3-6-3 double play to end the game and preserve the win.
Zilg fired his third complete game of the season as he struck five and scattered five hits as he raised his record to 6-2 overall. Knox finished the game 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI while Driscoll was 1-2 with one run scored.
The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to NJAC foe the College of NJ tomorrow afternoon for a double header starting at 11:30am.
