Men's Soccer WESTCONN SID

Two first-half goals help Ramapo run past WestConn, 2-0

Box Score Danbury, CT:  The scoring combination of Jonathan Yazo and Rob Santaniello got Ramapo College on the board early as the Roadrunners ran past Western Connecticut State University 2-0 in men's soccer action at the Westside Athletic Complex Monday evening.

Ramapo College began the scoring with just under ten minutes played when the combination of Yazo to Santaniello gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.  The goal was Santaniello's team-leading 13th of the season and 50th of his career, while the assist was Yazo's 12th, also a team high.  At the 17:51 mark, Santaniello hooked a corner kick from the right side that was deflected (headed) into the goal by Andrew Wilcox, giving Ramapo a 2-0 lead.  WestConn's best chance to get on the board in the first half came midway through period when a header by freshman Andrew Falencki sailed just inches over the crossbar.  After 45 minutes of play, Ramapo continued to lead 2-0.

After dominating play in the first half, Ramapo relied on goal tending and defense to maintain a 2-0 lead throughout the second half.  Yazo nearly gave the Roadrunners a three-point lead with 20 minutes to play, but after dribbling around two defenders and the WestConn keeper, he tripped over the ball while facing an empty net, and the ball was quickly cleared by one of the pursuing defenders.  WestConn's best scoring chance in the second half came when sophomore Muamer Ahmetovic hooked a low shot from the left side that was stopped by a diving Ramapo goalie inches from the goal-line.  Ramapo's final margin of victory remained 2-0.

For the game, Ramapo College held an 11-7 advantage in shots, and also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.  Sophomore Jack Holub finished with one save in goal in a losing effort for WestConn.  Ramapo's starting keeper David Lo Bue finished with two saves, before giving way to Steve Monaghan who collected tree saves in the second half.

WestConn's season record now stands at 1-11-2, while Ramapo College moves to 7-5-2.  The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to NJAC rival New Jersey City University on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
