SCARLET RAPTORS SWEEP RAMAPO IN NJAC BASEBALL ACTION

Camden, NJ: Rutgers University-Camden senior first baseman Matt Hunt (Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph-Hammonton) broke program single-season records for doubles and total bases while going 5-for-10 with four runs, six RBIs, three triples and a double to lead the Scarlet Raptors to a doubleheader sweep over Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball action Saturday at Campbell's Field.

John Santilli...6-for-9The Raptors, whose 37-hit attack also included a 6-for-9 by sophomore shortstop/designated hitter John Santilli (Folsom, NJ/St. Joseph-Hammonton), won the opener, 11-5, and took the nightcap 13-3 in a game stopped by the 10-run rule after seven innings.

The sweep allowed the Raptors to finish the regular season with a 20-18 record and an 8-10 mark in the NJAC, edging out Ramapo for seventh place in the conference.

Ramapo, which was still in the running for one of the six NJAC playoff spots entering the day, closed its regular season at 18-17 overall and 7-11 in the NJAC.

Rutgers-Camden is hoping to qualify for the ECAC Metro Baseball Championships. The ECAC field will be announced May 10.

Rutgers-Camden 11, Ramapo 5

Senior Kyle Ballay (Delran, NJ/Delran) worked 8.2 innings, hurling shutout ball into the eighth, as he won his first decision of the season. Ballay, who also owns a team-high five saves and is the Raptors' starting shortstop, also helped his own cause, going 2-for-4, reaching base twice as a hit batsman and scoring two runs.

Rutgers-Camden scored three times in the first, twice in the third and put the game away with a six-run sixth inning. The big sixth included a two-run triple by Matt Hunt, who hiked his season output to eight triples with a trio of three-baggers on the day. His eight triples are tied with Chris Godish (2002) for the second-highest single-season total in program history behind 11 from Brian Murphy, also in 2002.

Senior left fielder Jason Reed (Millville, NJ/Millville), who earlier in the game made a brilliant double play with a catch in left and a throw to nail a runner at the plate, added a two-run single in the frame. Santilli and senior catcher Greg Hunt (Marlton, NJ/St. Joseph-Hammonton) both added RBI singles in the frame.

Ramapo scored its five runs over the final two innings, including a two-run single by junior shortstop Rob Dimperio (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) in the eighth and an RBI single by Dimperio during a three-run ninth.

For the game, Santilli and senior center fielder Scott Fruits (Turnersville, NJ/Paul VI) each had three hits for the Raptors, while Matt Hunt and Jason Reed each added two hits and three RBIs.

For Ramapo, senior third baseman Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ/Union) and sophomore right fielder Daniel Mauriello (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) each had three hits.

Rutgers-Camden 13, Ramapo 3

After collecting 19 hits in the opener, the Raptors added 18 in the nightcap, including two triples and a double by Matt Hunt. His third-inning double set a single-season program mark with 15, snapping a tie at 14 with Nate Buchter (2006) and Ricky Flores (2002). It also gave him 106 total bases for the season, one more than the old mark set by Murphy in 2001. He added a fifth-inning triple to hike his new record to 109. Dan Fimiani...Complete-game win in nightcap

After Ramapo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Cacchiola, Rutgers-Camden roared back with a run in the bottom of the frame, two in the second and a five-run third. Santilli drilled a two-run double in the third.

For the game, Santilli and Matt Hunt each had three hits, while Ballay, Greg Hunt, sophomore second baseman Jon Hydock (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and junior left fielder Tom Clarke (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) each added two.

Junior righty Dan Fimiani (Pittsgrove, NJ/Schalick) hurled a complete game, allowing nine hits, one walk and three earned runs. Fimiani (3-2) struck out two.

Freshman third baseman Christian Spurr (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) had three hits for Ramapo, while junior second baseman Mark Ruggiero (Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) added two.

Roadrunner senior Michael Murano (Brick, NJ/Brick) took the loss, working 2.2 innings and allowing 10 hits and six earned runs. Murano (3-4) didn't have any walks or strikeouts.
