Danbury, CT: Sophomore right-fielder Mike Yates (Guilford, CT) had two hits and scored two runs, but they were the only runs the Western Connecticut State University baseball team scored as the Colonials dropped a non-conference game against Ramapo College 13-2 Monday evening at Westside Field.
The only other Colonial with two hits was senior shortstop Sam McNeil (Gales Ferry, CT) with singles in the fifth and seventh innings, but in both innings McNeil was stranded in scoring position when the final out of the inning was made.
For Ramapo College, lead-off hitter
Nicholas DiGirolamo (Dumont, NJ) reached base safely in all four plate appearances with a single and three walks and two runs scored.
Christian Spurr (Warren, NJ) also reached base safely four times and provided the game's biggest hit, a three-run homer over the fence in left field in the seventh inning.
The Roadrunners jumped out early in the first, getting the first two batters on base with a walk and a single. After a double play left a runner on third with two outs,
Dan Moreno (Cranford, NJ) hit a double down the line in right to give Ramapo a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning after the first Ramapo batter was retired, a walk, a single, and a double by DiGirolamo scored a run.
Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ) hit a two-run, two-out double to make the Roadrunner lead 4-0.
In WestConn's half of the second inning, Yates led off with a single and proceeded to steal both second and third base. After a Chris Smith (Monroe, CT) strike out and a Jeff Gordon (Milford, CT) walk, Yates scored on ground ball off the bat senior Dan Amarante (Cheshire, CT) to narrow the gap to 4-1.
Ramapo added a single run in the top of the third to push the lead to 5-1, and the Colonials answered by going out in order in their half of the third.
The Roadrunners added two unearned runs in the fifth for a 7-1 lead.
In the Ramapo half of the sixth, Cacchiola led off with a single to left, followed by a single to center by Moreno. Spurr then moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. After a strike out and a walk, the Roadrunners had the bases loaded with two outs. A hit batsman forced in one run and then pinch-hitter
Justin Donnarumma (Wayne, NJ) singled in two more giving Ramapo a 10-1 lead.
Yates again provided a spark for the Colonials in the sixth when he led off with a single up the middle. Smith then hit an RBI double to right center to drive in WestConn's second and final run.
Ramapo's final runs came in the top of the seventh when, with one out, Cacchiola hit a double to right center, Moreno walked, and Spurr followed with a blast deep over the left-field fence.
A flurry of defensive changes followed in the eighth and ninth innings, but after the final out was made, Ramapo left Westside Field with a 13-2 victory.
For the game, Ramapo College out-hit the Colonials 18-8, and left 12 men on base while the Colonials stranded 11.
