CARROLL PITCHES EIGHT COMPLETE INNINGS LEADING THE PIONEERS TO A 5-1 NJAC WIN OVER RAMAPO

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team opened the 2010 NJAC season with a 5-1 loss to the Pioneers of William Paterson today at Jeff Maund Field in Mahwah. With the loss, Ramapo falls to .500 at 6-6 overall, 0-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. William Paterson improves to 10-6-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference.

Junior lefthander Brett Carroll (River Edge, NJ) led the Pioneers to their first NJAC win of the year pitching eight innings and letting up only the one run. His team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning after Frank Franco (Wayne, NJ) drove a single into left field, driving in Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, NJ) who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. WPU put three more runs across the plate in the 2nd when Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, NJ) ripped a single scoring Jack Montanile (Weehawken, NJ) who reached on a fielder's choice with no outs. Moran came home on Lugo's second single of the game before Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, NJ crossed the plate on a Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, NJ) single to right, putting the Pioneers up, 4-0.

Ramapo finally got on the board in the 4th inning off a Dan Moreno (Cranford, NJ) solo homer over the left field wall. The Pioneers answered the run in the 6th inning with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield from Lugo, which brought home Montanile. Montanile reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Jacob Baron (North Brunswick, NJ) came in for relief in the 9th getting the three outs for the WPU, 5-1 win.

Guadango went 2-4 with one RBI while Lugo hit 1-3 in the game with one run and two RBI. Montanile scored two runs of his own hitting 1-4 and Dorio contributed one run hitting 1-3. Moreno scored Ramapo's lone run and led the team hitting 1-4 with one RBI.

Carroll gets the win pitching eight complete innings to improve to 3-0 overall. He struck out nine and walked five in the game. Senior pitcher Mike Murano (Brick, NJ) posted the loss in six innings letting up seven hits and all five runs. He falls to 3-1 on the year.

Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they travel to NJCU for a 3:30 PM start.
