Winter Haven, FL: The Ramapo College Baseball team lost their second straight game in the later innings, this time to Endicott College 11-9. The Roadrunners fall to .500 standing at 3-3 overall.
Ryan O'Grady started for the Roadrunners, and was not sharp in the first inning, surrendering four runs on two hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch. He was pulled after giving up a hit to the leadoff batter in the second.
Antonio Imbimbo replaced O'Grady, and allowed that runner to score, but shut down the Gulls bats the rest of the inning. Ramapo got one back when
Joey Cacchiola turned on an inside fastball, sending his first homerun, a solo shot, well beyond the left field wall. Imbimbo gave that run right back, when he gave up a leadoff solo home run to the Gulls 9th hitter to start the bottom of the inning.
The Roadrunners fought back in the top of the fifth. The rally was started by
Jordan Greenberg's leadoff walk, followed by shortstop
Rob Dimperio's first career home run, cutting the deficit in half, 5-3.
Pat Driscoll reached on an error. Nick DiGirolamo doubled. Cacchiola walked.
Dan Moreno struck out.
Christian Spurr walked, scoring Driscoll, and
Dan Mauriello was hit by a pitch, bringing in DiGirolamo. Then, in what proved to be a huge play in the game, catcher
Pete Dacenko sent a line drive to left field. The left fielder dove for the ball making the catch, Cacchiola tagged up at third base and scored – until the Gulls appealed third base, claiming Cacchiola left early, the field umpire agreed and called the runner out, ending the Roadrunner rally with the game tied at five.
Once again, the Roadrunners couldn't shut down the Gulls attack, as reliever Mike Hansford gave up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and one in the bottom of the sixth, and the Roadrunners once again found themselves down three, 8-5. Showing their character, the Roadrunners fought back once again, and took the lead in the top of the eighth inning, scoring four runs, all with two outs, to take the lead 9-8. The game however, slipped through the Roadrunners' fingers.
Tim Hannes got two quick outs in the bottom of the frame, then surrendered back to back walks to end his day. Freshman
Travis Zilg came on, and gave up three straight singles before recording the final out of the inning, Roadrunners trailing by two 11-9. That score would stand up, when Ramapo went down quietly in the ninth, each batter striking out.
The Roadrunners return to action today, in a double header, facing SUNY Cobbleskill and Albright University.
