STRONG TEAMWORK HELPS RAMAPO TO 5-1 WIN OVER VASSAR

Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College Lady Roadrunners faced off with the Brewers of Vassar College today in a non-conference field hockey match-up at the Athletic Center, posting a 5-1 victory to improve to 2-3 overall on the year. Vassar falls to 1-4.

Sophomore Jayne Manigrasso (Atlantic Highlands, NJ) scored her third goal of the season just over 14 minutes into the game giving the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead over the Brewers. The assist came from fellow forward, junior Kimberly Raimondi (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ). Senior Amanda Mavrakes (Wayne, NJ) took a free hit from the top of the circle, and rookie Victoria Ahlers (Freehold, NJ) connected on the pass giving the Roadrunners a two goal edge at 21:55 which held at the intermission horn.

The Roadrunners held a slight edge in shots in the half, 4-2, while Vassar earned three penalty corners to Ramapo's one. Megan Tierney (Wayne, NJ) blocked two shots in front of the cage in the first 35 minutes and Vassar netminder Rachel Clarkin-Breslin (Litchfield, CT) made one save of her own.

It took only 53 seconds at the start of the second half for Manigrasso to strike once again giving Ramapo a 3-0 lead, unassisted, and on a penalty corner at 45:40, Manigrasso took a pass from fellow sophomore Aimee Herbert (Ocean Port, NJ) netting her third of the game.

Vassar's lone goal came at the 58 minute mark when sophomore Maura McCarthy (Blue Bell, PA) ripped a shot past Tierney to close the gap, 4-1.

With ten seconds remaining in the game, rookie Rachel Wintermute (Hamilton, NJ) connected with Mavrakes to close out the non-conference win, 5-1.

Ramapo posted eight more shots in the final half while Vassar added two of their own. Tierney blocked two shots and Clarkin-Breslin stopped four. Vassar edged Ramapo in corners once again, 7-6.

The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, September 17th when they take on Western Connecticut at 4:30pm at the Athletic Center.
