Mahwah, NJ: Junior righthander Mike Swietanski pitched 8.0 innings and senior outfielder Garrett Mull bunted in the winning run as the six-seeded Profs of Rowan University eliminated the fifth-seeded Roadrunners of Ramapo College in the second round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament at Jeff Maund Field on Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore lefty Michael Cox recorded the save with a one-two-three 9th inning knocking off the Roadrunners, 3-2, who finish the tournament at 19-18 overall. The Profs improve to 21-14-1 overall and move into Saturday to face the third-seeded Pioneers of William Paterson University at noon at Kean University.
The Roadrunners made the first move in the bottom of the 2nd inning when with runners on first and second, and no outs, senior
Gino Gallagher (Cedar Grove, NJ) laid down a sacrifice bunt moving the runners up. Senior
Mike Manges (Glen Rock, NJ) stepped to the plate and singled down the left field line driving in rookie Daniel Mauriello (Monroe, NY) from third and sophomore
Justin Leon (New City, NY) from second, to take a 2-0 lead.
Ramapo's lead was short lived when in the top of the 3rd, Jordan Marsch crossed home plate for the Profs, closing the gap, 2-1. After leading off the inning with a single, Marsch advanced to third on a single up the middle from Sean Bowen, and touched home on a single from Marc Magliaro, all with no outs. Junior David Lenig drove in a run of his own in the same inning to knot the game at two runs each.
The game remained that way until the top of the 8th inning when with two outs on the board, Mull laid down a bunt between the pitcher and third baseman which allowed Scott Weaver, who pinch ran for designated hitter Tom Reindel, to score. Reindel singled to right field earlier in the inning to get on base.
The Roadrunners had an opportunity in the 8th with runners on first and second and two outs, but Swietanski forced a line drive third out to head into the 9th.
The one-two-three bottom of the 9th inning from Cox gave the Profs the 3-2 victory and Cox his second save of the year.
Mull finished the day hitting 2-4 with one RBI while Marsch and Bowen eached crossed home plate hitting 1-3 and 1-4 respectively. Weaver touched home for Rowan's third run of the game.
Cacchiola went 2-4 and Manges and Gallagher each went 1-3 while Manges recorded two RBI.
Sophomore righthander
Tim Hannes (Allendale, NJ) falls to 4-3 on the year pitching 7.2 innings. Hannes let up seven hits and all three runs while walking two and striking out four. Swietanski improves to 4-1. He struck out four and walked two, while letting up seven hits in the 8.0 innings pitched.
