WPU DOWNS RAMAPO IN NJAC OPENER, 61-58

Mahwah, NJ: Three different Pioneers scored in double figures as William Paterson pulled out a 61-58 win at the Bradley Center. With the win the Pioneers improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners suffer their first loss of the season falling to 4-1 overall, 0-1 in the conference.

The Roadrunners trailed by ten points twice in the first half as the Pioneers opened up a 18-8 lead with a junior Shaun Canty (Englewood, NJ) made foul shot with 6:20 remaining. Ramapo cut it to a three point game as sophomore Anthony LoRusso (Mahwah, NJ) was hit a jumper and was fouled by the Pioneers, he would convert on the three point play and sink his foul shot with 4:45 to go in the half. The Pioneers again stretched their lead to ten with a made jumper by junior Gabriel Paul (Hillside, NJ) as senior Tim Lucas (Old Bridge, NJ) dished out one of his six assists in the game.

Sophomore LaQuan Peterkin (Paterson, NJ) hit a jumper to pull within eight points with 1:14 remaining. The Pioneers made a foul shot with four seconds left and rookie Travis Conyers (Jersey City, NJ) made a last second shot from mid-court as time expired to end the half down six points, 25-31.

The Pioneers would stretch their lead to 12 points in the second half on two made foul shots, 45-34 before Ramapo made a come back. Sophomore Davian Plunkett (Paterson, NJ) dished a pass to senior Isaiah Lynch (Linden, NJ) who converted on a three pointer, 37-45. Ramapo took the lead by one point, 52-51 on rookie Stephon Treadwell's (Newark, NJ) jumper and would go up by two on sophomore Garret Thiel's (Middletown, NJ) foul shot. WPU would tie and take the lead in game with back-to-back jumpers by senior Bobby Dunn (Garwood, NJ) with 4:38 remaining in the second half. Another made jumper by WPU and a pair of made foul shots stretched their lead to six with 1:27 left in the half.

LoRusso would come up big for the Roadrunners converting on a four-point play, when he drained a three pointer with 30 seconds remaining as he was fouled on the play. He made his fourth foul shot of the game to come within two, 58-60. Ramapo would have a chance to win the game on a jumper but it was blocked by senior Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (Newark, NJ) with three seconds remaining before a Ramapo foul stopped the clock. Dunn converted on the second foul shot to put the Pioneers ahead, 61-58 before time ran out on Ramapo's last second shot.

Senior Joseph Ellis (Newark, NJ) tallied 15 points, going 9-14 from the foul line while Paul posted 12 points and Dunn 11 points. Ouedraogo finished the game with six blocks, nine points and nine rebounds and two steals. WPU shot 59% from the foul line while going 34% from the field and 15% from behind the arc.

Peterkin recorded a double-double, tallying 14 points and 12 rebounds while Conyers posted 11 points off the bench. LoRusso tallied nine points in the game. The Roadrunners shot 40% from the field and 47% from the foul line and 23% from behind the arc.

The Roadrunners return to action on December 10th when they host New York City College of Technology at 7:30 PM. The Pioneers will host NJAC rival the College of New Jersey on December 5th at 1:00 PM.
