Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team, seeded #2 in the 2008 ECAC Metro Baseball Tournament, defeated the #3 seeded Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent College (23-16) today at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners (23-18) earned the 4-3 victory after senior
Jairo Jimenez (Bronx, NY) knocked in the game-winning run on a single to short stop in the 7th inning.
Senior
Nick Sbarra (Washington Twp., NJ) ripped a single to right field with one out in the 7th and stole second before advancing to third base on a ground out from fellow senior
Ryan Paxton (Long Valley, NJ). Sbarra scored one batter later when Jimenez hit the infield single. Sbarra's run stood as the game winner after rookie pitcher
Jack McDonough (Cranford, NJ) struck out the final batter in the 8th to close out the inning and recorded his 11th strike out of the game in the top of the 9th to lead Ramapo to their 23rd win of the year.
Mt. St. Vincent got on the scoreboard first in the top of the 2nd when Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, NY) scored on a Nick Canzano (Farmington, NY) RBI single to right field. The Roadrunners answered back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own from
Aaron Drury (Canton, MI) and
Mike Manges (Glen Rock, NJ) who reached on an error and singled to center respectively to get on base.
Mt. St. Vincent tied the game and took the lead in the 3rd with a two-run double from Schor to score Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, NJ) and Logan Mauzy (Homer, NY). Sbarra posted the game-tying run in the 5th inning when a passed ball allowed him to cross home plate safely.
Sbarra hit 1-4 with two runs while Jimenez hit 2-3 with the game winning RBI. The Roadrunners combined for seven hits, all off of starting pitcher Corey Kirsh (East Meadow, NY). He let up all four runs recording the loss to fall to 2-2 on the year.
McDonough improves to 6-3 with the win. He struck out 11 and walked only one in the complete game. He gave up five total hits.
The Roadrunners will face off with the #1 seeded Ospreys of Richard Stockton College on Saturday, May 10th at 11:00 AM. The loser of that game will face off with Mt. St. Vincent at 2:30 PM facing elimination in the double-elimination tournament.
