SBARRA KNOCKS OUT TWO-RUN HOMER TO GAIN LEAD

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team earned a NJAC victory today at Jeff Maund field in Mahwah over the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers Camden, 11-8.  Senior Nick Sbarra (Washington Twp., NJ) ripped a home run in the 2nd inning to gain a 4-3 and the Roadrunners never turned back posting their 17th win of the year.  Ramapo improves to 17-17 overall, 5-10 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 8-25 overall, 1-14 in the conference.

The Scarlet Raptors got on the board when Matt Gabrielski (Atco, NJ) ripped a three run homerun over the right field wall to take a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.

Senior Jairo Jimenez (Bronx, NY) ripped a single to right-centerfield scoring junior Mike Manges (Glen Rock, NJ) who lead off the bottom of the 2nd inning with a single to right field.  Senior Aaron Drury (Canton, MI) doubled down the left field line plating Jimenez before senior Sbarra drilled a home run of his own over the right field wall to put the Roadrunners ahead 4-3.

In the 3rd, Ramapo's senior Ryan Paxton (Long Valley, NJ) ripped a triple with one out and came home on Mange's sac fly to centerfield.  Jimenez stepped to the plate and homered to centerfield taking a three run advantage after three innings. 

Drury scored on a passed ball in the 4th inning and the Roadrunners recorded a four run 5th to go up, 11-3 on the Scarlet Raptors.  The Raptors closed the gap with one run each in the 7th and 8th innings from Dennis Hill (Pilesgrove, NJ) and Greg Hunt (Marlton, NJ) respectively, 11-5.

In the top of the 9th, the Scarlet Raptors connected five singles, split by an out to plate three more runs.  Scott Fruits (Turnersville, NJ) led off with a single before Park ripped a single of his own.  After Hunt grounded out to first base, Gabrielski, AJ Calderone (Collingswood, NJ), Dean Straga (Mullica Hill, NJ) hit back-to-back-to back singles to come within three, 11-8.  With runners on first and second, rookie right hander Jack McDonough (Cranford, NJ) came in to face the final batter, striking out Steve Myers (Millville, NJ) to earn his third save of the year.

Paxton went 2-4 with two runs in the win while Manges hit a perfect 2-2 with two runs and two RBI.  Jimenez and Drury hit 2-3 with two runs and two RBI and two runs and one RBI respectively.  Sbarra hit a perfect 3-3 including a two-run bomb.  He drove in three runs and scored one of his own.

Tim Hannes (Allendale, NJ) earned the victory today to improve to 2-1 overall.  He struck out ten and walked only one in 7.1 innings of work.  Dan Fimiani (Pittsgrove, NJ) gets the loss in 2.1 innings.  He let up five runs and struck out none while walking none.  He falls to 0-2 on the year.

Hill hit 2-4 with one run for Rutgers Camden while Gabrielski hit 2-5 with one run and a team high four RBI.  Park went 2-5 with two runs in the loss.
 
The Roadrunners return to action on Friday, April 25, 2008 as they travel to NJAC rival The College of NJ for a 3:30 PM start.
