RAMAPO KNOCKS OFF WESTFIELD STATE, 6-3

Orlando, FL: The Ramapo College Roadrunners baseball team beat the Owls of Westfield State 6-3, to earn their fourth win of the young season. Ramapo got on the board early as Justin Rabinowitz (Martinsville, NJ) doubled to lead off the second. He advanced to third base on a Gino Gallagher (Cedar Grove, NJ) ground out, and then scored on a Dave Deredita (Clark, NJ) RBI single, giving the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead. Deredita scored later in the inning on a Mike Manges (Glen Rock, NJ) single to extend the lead to 2-0.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the third inning, when the Owls were able to manufacture a run, thanks to a hit by pitch, a couple of singles, and an RBI groundout, cutting the Roadrunner lead in half, 2-1. The teams played even until the top of the 7th, when Ramapo rallied for four runs, making the score 6-1. The inning was highlighted by back to back doubles from Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ) and Manges.

Roadrunner reliever Dan Mulligan (Wilmington, DE) pitched well, but was touched for a pair of hits sandwiched around a strikeout in the eighth inning. He gave way to lefty Thomas Dougherty (Manchester, NJ) who was able to record the second out of the inning, but the Owls scored a pair on a tough hop fielding error by Rabinowitz. Dougherty was replaced by righty John Lightbody (Toms River, NJ), who promptly ended the threat with a strikeout. Leading 6-3, Ramapo went quietly in the ninth. Lightbody struck out the first batter of the Owl 9th, induced a pop out, gave up a double, and then struck out the final batter of the game, to earn his first career collegiate save.

Manges and Cacchiola each recorded three hits for Ramapo, while six different Roadrunners crossed home plate. Mike Murano (Brick, NJ) earned his first victory of the season, as he went five innings, allowing only one run while scattering four hits. The Roadrunners take on Curry College tomorrow.
