Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team defeated New Jersey City University today, 4-3 extending their win streak to six games including five straight NJAC victories. With the win the Roadrunners improve 18-4 overall, 5-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Gothic Knights fall to 10-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Ramapo scored the first run of the game in the 1st inning when junior
Nick Sbarra (Washington Twp., NJ) scored on a single to left field by rookie Joe Cacchiola (Union, NJ). Ramapo tacked on a second run in the third inning off a
Jordan Descafano (Toms River, NJ) sacrifice fly to center field that scored sophomore
Justin Rabinowitz (Martinsville, NJ) who reached on a single earlier in the inning. Cacchiola ripped a two-run homerun over the left field wall in the 4th to grab a 4-0 edge over NJCU.
The Gothic Knights scored three runs, one earned, in the top of the 5th inning after Anthony Cacchiola (Union, NJ) singled to left field and Andrew Decibus (Carteret, NJ) walked before Anthony Mackow (Bayonne, NJ) doubled to right field scoring Cacchiola. Ryan Pelt (Branchville, NJ) reached on an error by the shortstop that allowed Macko and Decibus to cross home plate to come within one run, 4-3.
The Roadrunners stellar pitching performance in the final innings held Ramapo's one run edge wrapping up the game, 4-3 in Mahwah.
Cacchiola went 3-5 including a home run with one run and three RBI while Sbarra posted two hits on four at bats with two runs scored. NJCU's A. Cacchiola hit 2-4 with one run. The Gothic Knights were held to only five hits by the Roadrunner pitching staff while Ramapo ripped nine hits in the win.
Sophomore pitcher
Joe Abruzzo (Clark, NJ) pitched 5.2 innings letting up only three hits, and striking out five. Abruzzo earns the win improving to 4-0 on the year.
Tim Seiden (West Milford, NJ) pitched two innings holding the Gothic Knights to two hits and no runs before Cacchiola stepped to the mound and shut down NJCU pitching 1.1 innings recording his fifth save of the season.
Ahson Shahid (Harrison, NJ) records the loss falling to 1-2 on the year letting up eight hits with all four runs, all earned. Shahid struck out four and walked six in the loss.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Kean University at 3:30 PM while the Gthic Knights take on Montclair State at 3:30 PM in Jersey City, NJ.
