Mahwah, NJ: The Roadrunners posted 24 hits to power past the Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent, 20-3 in a non-conference baseball match-up at Jeff Maund Field today in Mahwah. Ramapo improves to 28-8 overall while the Dolphins fall to 7-14.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a 2-0 lead the bottom of the 1st inning after
John Callandrello (Montville, NJ) ripped a double with two outs and
Jairo Jimenez (Bronx, NY) followed with a triple to right center driving in Callandrello. Jimenez came home on an error by the third baseman to take a two run edge after one.
The Roadrunners tacked on five more runs in the 2nd inning on two hits and three Dolphin errors.
Gino Gallagher (Cedar Grove, NJ),
Shaun Hanrahan (West Keansburg, NJ),
Gary Miller (Washington Twp., NJ),
Nick Sbarra (Washington Twp., NJ), and Jimenez each posted runs in the inning. Gallagher was hit by a pitch, Hanrahan reached on a fielder's choice, Miller reached on an error, Sbarra on a fielder's choice, and Jimenez singled to left field to get on base.
The Dolphins finally got a run of their own in the top of the 3rd when Anthony Brestolli(Wyckoff, NY) walked to lead off and later came home on a ground out by
Al Schor (Norwalk, CT) to close the gap, 7-1.
After Gallagher singled and got caught in a run down to start off the 3rd inning, the Roadrunners tacked on two more runs after Hanrahan singled to left field and later came home on a RBI single from rookie
Mark Ruggiero (Fairfield, NJ). Callandrello drove in Sbarra before the end of the inning to take a 9-1 lead.
Ramapo continued to hit away ripping six hits in the 5th, driving in five more runs to take a 14-1 edge over the Dolphins. Sbarra doubled to lead off the inning, Ruggiero singled, and Callandrello followed with a single of his own driving in Sbarra. Jimenez singled, and Gallagher ripped a double to center field clearing the bases. Hanrahan wrapped up the inning with a single driving in Gallagher for a 13 run lead over Mt. St. Vincent.
The Roadrunners scattered their next six runs over the final three innings off nine hits to defeat the Dolphins, 20-3.
Justin Donnarumma (Wayne, NJ) scored in the 6th after reaching on an error to get on base and scored again in the 7th getting on with a second error. Sophomore
Steve Libert (Wayne, NJ) ripped a three-run bomb over the left field wall in the 7th and Ruggiero scored in the 8th downing the Dolphins by 17.
Only seven of the Roadrunners' runs were earned. Mt. St. Vincent caused seven errors in the loss. Senior pitcher
Rich Collyer (Staten Island, NY) improved to 3-0 on the year striking out seven and walking only one in five innings of work.
Jordan Descafano (Toms River, NJ),
EJ Sullivan (Livingston, NJ), and rookie
Dave Ragazzo (Bridgewater, NJ) all put in time on the mound letting up no hits and no runs in a combined four innings pitched.
Callandrello and Jimenez went 3-4 on the day with one run and two RBI and three runs and two RBI respectively. Ruggiero tacked on three runs of his own while driving in two and Gallagher hit a perfect 3-3 with two runs and three RBI. Sbarra scored three, Donnarumma two, and Hanrahan two in the team's 28th victory of the year. Hanrahan went 2- on the day.
Brestolli hit 1-2 with one run and Eddie Park (Westbury, NY) and Joe Motta (Brooklyn, NY) scored the Dolphins final two runs in the loss.
The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, April 26th when they host conference rival Kean University at 3:30 PM. Ramapo will honor their seniors prior to the start of the game.
