Ira Thor - NJCU SID
JERSEY CITY, NJ… Ramapo College rallied from a 2-0 deficit by logging four of its six hits and all six of its runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Roadrunners, ranked #25 in Division III by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball, held off New Jersey City University, 6-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
Ramapo, which won both meetings this season, but only by a combined margin of five runs, improves to 26-6 and 10-2 in the league. The Knights (13-16, 2-9 NJAC) drop their third straight. It was their first game in five days.
In defeat, junior shortstop JOSE FULGENCIO (Bronx, NY/San Rafael, Dominican Republic) extended his hitting streak to 19 consecutive games—now just four shy of matching the all-time program record and one behind second place. Junior centerfielder ROB SUMNER (Union, NJ/Union) scored both NJCU markers.
Fulgencio went 3-for-4 with two RBIs—his 38th of the season, and just 10 shy of the nearly 20-year-old single-season record of 48. He also added two steals, and is 19-of-21 this year in steal opportunities. He was NJCU's only player with multiple hits as the Knights collected seven overall.
Ramapo freshman second baseman
Joey Cacchiola (Union, NJ/Union) had three RBIs, finishing 2-for-5, and was the only RCNJ player with multiple hits.
Junior right-hander
Tim Seiden (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) won for Ramapo (4-1). In 6.1 innings, he allowed two earned runs and six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Freshman righty
Michael Murano (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts.
Senior right-handed pitcher MILTON RODRIGUEZ (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) had a one-hitter brewing after six innings before the six-run seventh. He suffered his second loss (2-2), allowing all Ramapo's runs, but only five hits, with four walks and two Ks.
Freshman left-hander JONATHAN GOMEZ (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City) pitched 2/3 of an inning, not allowing a hit with three walks. Senior lefty MIKE ESPIN (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) was solid, pitching the final 1.2 innings, with one hit allowed and one strikeout.
NJCU's runs came in the third and fifth innings and Fulgencio singled home Sumner in both instances.
But in the seventh, Ramapo took advantage of two NJCU errors and had some timely hitting. Sophomore third baseman
Gino Gallagher (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) tied the game with a single and sophomore first baseman
Justin Rabinowitz (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) walked with the bases loaded to drive in the eventual game-winner. Cacchiola followed with a three-run single to right center to cap the scoring.
NJCU returns to action on Friday, April 20 when it visits #5 Kean University in Union, NJ at 3:30 p.m. Ramapo will travel to nationally ranked The College of New Jersey on April 21.
