Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team was swept today in a NJAC double header against William Paterson University. The Roadrunners fall to 16-19 overall and 3-13 in the conference while the Pioneers raise their record to 26-11 overall and 13-4 in the conference.
Game 1: The Roadrunners jumped out to at 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning as
Mike Frank (Belleville, NJ) scored when
Gary Miller (Turnersville, NJ) doubled to left field.
Joe Rivisto (Bronx, NY) then doubled home Miller for the 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers came back in the top of the 5th inning with three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead. Dan Limone (Teaneck, NJ) walked and stole second, he advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher before Rick Pignatello (Wayne, NJ) grounded out to the shortstop to score Limone. Another Ramapo error and a double by Don Reinertsen (Swartswood, NJ) scored the second run of the inning. Ted King (West Windsor, NJ) then ripped a single to leftfield to score Reinersten from third.
In the 6th Mike Fernandez (West New York, NJ) ripped a double and was sacrificed to third he later scored when Limone ripped a double to left field. Don Hayes (Paramus, NJ) reached base on a walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Pignatello then lined a double to right field to score Limone.
Ramapo tacked on three runs on two hits in the bottom of the 8th inning. Frank was hit by a pitch, Miller walked and Rivisto was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Mike Stetsko (Beachwood, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Frank.
Brad Szatkiewicz (Branchville, NJ) ripped a single to right field to plate Miller.
Justin Rabinowitz (Martinsville, NJ) then singled home pinch runner Dave Deredita (Clark, NJ) for the final run of the inning.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the bottom of the 9th as pinch hitter
Greg Smith (Brick, NJ) ripped a single to left field to score pinch runner
Gino Gallagher (Cedar Grove, NJ).
The Pioneers answered back with four runs in the top of the 10th inning. Wayne Poppe (Sloatsburg, NY) reached base on a Ramapo error and later scored as an attempted sacrifice was misplayed and Poppe reached third base. Pinch runner Chris Arecchi (Hazlet, NJ) then scored when Limone ripped a single to right field. The Pioneers scored two more runs to take the lead at 10-5.
Steve Schlitzer (West New York, NJ) picked up the win in relief for the Pioneers, pitching two innings while striking out none and walking one. He gave up one run and gave up four hits.
Limone went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's while King went 2-4 with 3 RBI's.
Joe Abruzzo was tagged with the loss as he pitched 3.2 innings, striking out three and walking two. Miller went 3-3 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI and Rivisto went 1-2 with 1 RBI.
Game 2: The Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Reinertsen was hit by a pitch and King singled to center before Rivera tripled to center field scoring 2 runs.
The Roadrunners answered back with one run of their own in the bottom of the first as Szatkiewicz ripped a single to left field to score Miller who hit a single to center field to reach base.
William Paterson scored one run on one hit in the fourth inning as Brand doubled to left field and later scored on a wild pitch. In the 5th inning Pignatello doubled and scored as Poppe singled to left field, he later scored as Reinertsen then doubled home Poppe. Brand ripped a single to right field to score Reinertsen.
Ramapo scored four runs on five hits in the seventh inning.
Jordan Descafano singled to center field and later scored on an infield error by William Paterson. Miller then singled to left field to score
Mike Jakupcionis (, NJ) who reached base on a double to left field. Rivisto singled home Frank with a single to center field and
Mike Stetsko singled to left field to bring home Miller.
The Pioneers held Ramapo the rest of the way to pick up the win. Tim Cowan got the win for William Paterson as he pitched 7 innings, giving up 9 hits and striking out 6 and only walking 1 batter. Rivera went 2-4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI's and Brand was 2-4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.
Joe Coppage picked up the loss for the Roadrunners, he pitched 5 innings while giving up nine hits and striking out three. Miller was 2-4 with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI and Rivisto was 3-5 with 1 RBI.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow as they take on NJAC rival The College of NJ starting at 11:00 AM at Jeff Maund Field.
