Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team dropped a non-conference game against The College of Staten Island today in Mahwah, 7-4. With the loss the Roadrunners fall to 13-12 overall while the Dolphins improve to 14-7 overall.
The Roadrunners got on the board in the top of the 1st inning when
David Deredita (Clark, NJ) singled past the shortstop and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Nick Sbarra (Washington Twp., NJ) hit a ball that was misplayed by the second basemen allowing Deredita to score to get the Roadrunners on the board, 1-0. Sbarra advanced to second on the play and advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on an error by the catcher to take a 2-0 1st inning lead.
The Dolphins scored two runs of their own in the top of the 3rd inning to tie the game when Joe Guarneri (Staten Island, NY) doubled and Mohammad Hamad (Staten Island, NY) reached on a fielder's choice setting up a Paul Bounviaggio (Staten Island, NY) double to put Staten Island on the board at 2-2.
In the 4th inning, Ramapo's
Justin Rabinowitz (Martinsville, NJ) singled to left field and stole second base before
Gary Miller (Turnersville, NJ) doubled him home to put the Roadrunners up by one. Staten Island answered scoring two runs on two hits when Hamad reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a Mike Liconti (Staten Island, NY) single to center field. The Dolphins scored their second run as a ground ball was misplayed at shortstop allowing Bounviaggio to cross the plate.
In the bottom of the 7th, pinch hitter
Mike Frank (Belleville, NJ) of Ramapo walked and stole second and Miller knocked him in to tie the game, 4-4, with a single to right field. Ramapo was unable to hold on as the Dolphins scored three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the 9th inning to take the game. Michael Madalone (Staten Island, NY) drove in what turned out to be the game winner with a single to left field. Madalone drove in Bounviaggio who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning to get on base.
The Dolphins were led by Liconti who posted two hits on four at bats with one run and one RBI. Buonviaggio went 1-3 with two hits runs and twp RBI while Madalone and Hamad added one and two runs respectively. Hamad went 0-4 and Madalone hit 2-5 in the win. Senior pitcher Jamie Lee (Staten Island, NY) earned the win pitching three innings recording two strike outs and one walk.
For the Roadrunners, Miller went 3-4 with two RBI and Deredita went 1-3 with one run scored. Sbarra, Rabinowitz, and Frank rounded out Ramapo's final three runs. Sophomore pitcher
Jordan Descafano (Toms River, NJ) records the loss in one inning striking out one falling to 1-1 on the year.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow when they host John Jay College at Jeff Maund Field. First pitcher scheduled for 3:30 PM.
