Mahwah , NJ : The Ramapo College baseball team held onto an early lead and held off the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark in the bottom of the 9th to win, 7-6. The Roadrunners improved their record to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raiders falls to 7-9-2 overall and 1-2 in the NJAC.
Senior first basemen DOUG MEIER (Clifton, NJ ) tripled in the bottom of the second inning and scored on a single to left by junior catcher MIKE JAKUPCIONIS (Edison, NJ ). In the third inning senior designated hitter AARON EYLER (Edison, NJ ) scored when BRAD SZATKIEWICS (BRANCHVILLE, NJ ) ripped a triple to center field. He later came home when MEIER singled. Runners were at first and second when JAKUPCIONIS belted a three run homer to left field. They held the Scarlet Raiders scoreless until the 6th inning when they scored two runs on three hits. Matt Halligan (Pompton Plains, NJ ) singled and came home on a double from Kyle Long (Toms River, NJ). Robert Eberhard picked up a RBI when he singled home LONG. Ramapo answered with one run of their own in the bottom of the 6th when EYLER had a RBI single to bring in JAKUPCIONIS. In the 7th Bill Mercurio (Wappinger Falls, NY ) hit a two run homer to right field cutting the score to 7-4. In the bottom of the ninth John Farmer led off the inning with a double. He came into score when Mercurio singled to center. Halligan singled up the middle to score Mercurio to bring the score to 7-6. Freshmen pitcher CHRIS STANISCE (Glassboro,NJ ) then induced pop out to center for the 3rd out, picking up the save.
EYLER went 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI, MEIER went 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI and JAKUPCIONIS went 3-4 scoring two runs with four RBI's.
Senior PATRICK TUTHILL (DOYLESTOWN, PA ) picked up the win improving to 2-0 on the year. He gave up 8 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings and 4 earned runs.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow April 9th, when they play host to Richard Stockton College at Jeff Maund Field starting at Noon.
