ROADRUNNERS TURN AWAY REDHAWKS 13-8

Mahwah , NJ : The Ramapo College baseball team defeated NJAC rival Montclair State University today at Jeff Maund Field on the campus of Ramapo College in Mahwah. The Roadrunners improve to 14-9 overall, 4-4 in conference, while MSU falls 8-12, 3-5 in conference.

The Roadrunners broke through for three runs in the top of the second inning with two out as GARY MILLER (Turnville, NJ ) drove a double to the centerfield wall scoring DOUG MEIER (Clifton, NJ ) and MIKE JAKUPCIONIS (Edison, NJ ) who singled and walked respectively. Ramapo was not done yet thanks to JON WESTERFIELD (Vernon, NJ ) singled to right scoring MILLER. DOUG ADAY (Ferris, TX) led off the third inning with a single followed by a BRAD SZATKIEWICZ (Branchville, NJ) walk. After a MEIER sacrifice bunt, JOE RIVISTO (Bronx, NY) tripled off the left center field wall scoring a pair. RIVISTO would later score on a Brian Rocco (Nanuet, NY) balk, to put the Roadrunners ahead 6-0. After cruising through the first three innings Ramapo starter PAT TUTHILL (Doylestown, PA) ran into some trouble when Danny Rodriguez (So. Brunswick, NJ) doubled to start the inning, and scored on an Ethan Boyd (Perth Amboy, NJ) single one pitch later. TUTHILL retired cleanup hitter Brian Butler (Wyckoff, NJ) before Ed Kloepping (Pennsville, NJ) belted a pitch over the right field wall to cut Ramapo's lead in half, 6-3. The Roadrunners answered right back in the bottom of the inning scoring four more, highlighted by a NICK SBARRA two RBI single to center, making the score 10-3.

TUTHILL could not make it out of the fifth, as he allowed three more runs to cross the plate, before freshman CHRIS STANISCE (Glassboro, NJ) came in and shut down the Red Hawk attack. Montclair State would get one run in the seventh to cut the lead to three, but Ramapo pushed back in the bottom half of the inning putting two more runs up. SBARRA was then hit by a pitch, and CHRIS SOMJEN (Dover, NJ) sacrificed him to second, ADAY was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. The move turned out to backfire as SZATKIEWICZ tripled to score the pair.

Montclair State threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring one run and leaving the bases loaded before STANISCE got Mark Decastro (Hadden Heights, NJ) to pop up to shortstop to end the game. STANISCE picked up the win pitching 4.1 innings of relief, giving up four hits, two runs, while striking out four. He improves to 2-2 on the year.
