ZIMMERMAN SHINES AS RAMAPO FIELD HOCKEY SNEAKS BY DESALES, 4-3
Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College field hockey team played host to DeSales University today at Don Bosco Prep in a non-conference match-up. The Roadrunners snuck by the Bulldogs, 4-3 improving to 5-8 on the year. DeSales falls to 9-8 overall.
The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard first in the 18th minute when rookie ASHLEY ZIMMERMAN (North Plainfield, NJ) ripped one past sophomore goaltender Amy Zoltek (Harleysville, PA) for the 1-0 lead. DeSales leading goal scorer Gina Malatesta (Warminster, PA) connected with Amanda Deal (Macungie, PA) just over six minutes later tying the game at one goal apiece. The half finished in a 1-1 tie with Ramapo out shooting DeSales, 5-4.
Zimmerman struck again in the opening minutes of the second half giving Ramapo a 2-0 edge before Malatesta countered to tie the game once again. Zimmerman's goal came assisted by sophomore ASHLEY BROWNE (Tinton Falls, NJ). Zimmerman didn't stop driving a third goal past Zoltek at 54:42 off an assist by sophomore LINDSAY HELLWIG (Mt. Olive, NJ). DeSale's Marisa Baldassano (Audubon, NJ) posted her fifth goal of the year at 57:15 on a penalty corner posting the game's third tie score, 3-3.
The Bulldogs had a chance to jump ahead for the first time in the game when they were awarded a penalty stroke at 58:44. Junior goalkeeper KATELYN FERGUSON (Sussex, NJ) stepped up and made a huge save for the Roadrunners for a 3-3 stand still. Rookie AMANDA WICHNICK (Middletown, NJ) connected with BROWNE posting what turned out to be the game winner at 64:47. Ramapo's FERGUSON recorded six saves in the last 35 minutes earning the Roadrunners the 4-3 win.
FERGUSON posted eight total saves in the 4-3 victory earning her third shut out of the year while Zoltek posted six saves with four goals against in the full 70 minutes.
Ramapo will travel to Kean University on Saturday, October 29th for a NJAC match-up at 1:00 PM.
