Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College Roadrunners played host to the Lions of the College of New Jersey today at Jeff Maund Field in Mahwah. Ramapo fell short in game one, 4-5, and in game two, 6-3. The Roadrunners fall to 16-11-1 overall, 5-6 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while the Lions improve to 20-6-1 overall, 10-4 in the conference.
Game 1: Jason Gumnitz (Middletown, NJ) hit a lead off single in the 1st and later scored off a passed ball to give the College of NJ a 1-0 lead. Greg Martinez (Toms River, NJ) scored one of his own after singling to get on base. Martinez crossed home plate off a RBI double by senior Nick Stine (Flemington, NJ). Ramapo posted one in the 2nd, and tied the game in the 3rd with a RBI single by DOUG ADAY (Dallas, TX), crossing MIKE LALLIS (Berkeley Heights, NJ) who walked to get on base. The Roadrunners took the lead in the 5th with runs by JONATHAN LOPEZ (Bronx, NY) and RYAN PAXTON (Long Valley, NJ). LOPEZ hit a RBI double driving in PAXTON, and ADAY posted a RBI double driving in LOPEZ to jump ahead 4-2. The Lions fought back posting one in the 6th and two in the 8th dropping the Roadrunners, 5-4. In the 8th, Stine recorded a lead off double and Bryan Flynn (Denville, NJ) pinch hit, walking to first base. Stine and Flynn scored the tying and winning runs respectively by junior Patrick Zegarski's (Hamilton, NJ) RBI double.
Ramapo posted four runs on nine hits with two errors while TCNJ recorded five runs on nine hits with no errors. Ramapo's LOPEZ went 3-4 with one run and one RBI while ADAY posted two hits on five at bats with no runs and two RBI. DOUG MEIER (Clifton, NJ) went 1-4 and PAXTON went 1-2, each with one run in the game. For the Lions, Patrick Zegarski (Hamilton, NJ) went 2-3 with two RBI and Stine posted two hits with one run and one RBI. Martinez hit 2-5 with one run. PATRICK TUTHILL (Doylestown, PA) recorded the loss falling to 2-3 with three strikeouts and five walks giving up five runs (4 earned). Julius Jenkins (Roebling, NJ) earned the win striking out four in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Jenkins improves to 3-0.
Game 2: The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when RAMON DIAZ (Bronx, NY) touched home plate after reaching on an error to lead off the inning. Mike Feaster (South River, NJ) stole second base, advanced to third on a sac fly to right field by Chris Schoonhoven (Middletown, NJ), and scored the tying run on an error. TCNJ took the lead with a run by Brian Hickey (Middletown, NJ) in the 3rd, and added insurance runs in the 4th, 6th and 7th, dropping the Roadrunners, 6-3.
Feaster went 1-3 with one run and one RBI while Zegarski posted two hits with one RBI. Steven Czajka (Cherry Hill, NJ) hit 1-2 with one run and two RBI and Jamie Riese (Hamilton, NJ), Shoonhoven, Hickey, and Stine all added one run of their own. DIAZ went 1-3 with two runs and DAVE WINANS (Hillsborough, NJ) went 1-4 with two RBI in the game. Mark Sanborn (Brookside, NJ) earned the win, improving to 4-1, with five strikeouts and no walks in eight innings pitched. PAT DOUGHERTY (Staten Island, NY) struck out two and walked six recording the loss, falling to 1-4 on the season.
The Roadrunners will host Rutgers Camden on Monday, April 21 at 3:00 PM.
