Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College community is heartbroken over the loss of a Roadrunner, Andrew Capizzi, 24, of Paramus, New Jersey.
A four-year member of the men's cross country and track and field team, Capizzi, (November 25, 1988-June 2, 2013), passed away Sunday morning from injuries suffered in a cycling accident. Capizzi is survived by his parents, Lorraine and David, and his brother, Joshua.
Capizzi graduated from Ramapo College in May of 2011 with a degree in psychology. He went on to earn a master's degree in forensic psychology from John Jay College in New York, this past May.
During his time at Ramapo, Capizzi served as captain of the cross country team, and broke the college's record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, a record he still holds today. He earned NJAC 1st Team All-Conference honors in 2009 and 2010. He was named the team's rookie of the year in 2007, earned the coach's award in 2009, and was named most valuable runner in 2010. He was also honored as a member of the USTFCCCA's All-Academic Team for his success in the classroom, while earning dean's list honors all four years at Ramapo.
Head Coach
Mike Jackson remembers Capizzi “as a person who made history and was instrumental in the progress of our program.” “He was a great leader and an outstanding supporter of our program once he graduated.”
Capizzi was currently serving as an assistant track and field coach at Holy Angels in Demarest, while working for a running store in Ridgewood.
One of Ramapo's finest student-athletes, he will be greatly missed!
