Panama City Beach, FL: The Ramapo college softball team split their first two games at the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic.
In game one, the Roadrunners scored late in the sixth inning to take a 5-2 lead over Lynchburg College while falling to Emerson College, 4-2.
Junior
Rachel Wong doubled to start the sixth inning before she was sacrificed to second. Junior
Stephanie Malgeri singled to left field to plate Wong before the bases were loaded for rookie
Kelsey Higgins. Higgins put the ball in play and the Lynchburg defense threw the ball past the first baseman allowing all three base runners to score and Higgins ended up on third base.
Lynchburg scored an early run in the first inning on a two-out rally in the bottom of the first. The Roadrunners tied the game in the top of the second on a solo home run by sophomore
Maggie Scarpelli.
Lynchburg took the lead back in the bottom of the third on a solo home run before Ramapo came back in the top of the sixth.
Junior
Deanna Giordano picked up her first win of the season with a complete game with six strikeouts and two walks.
In game two Emerson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Ramapo tied the game on a RBI single by rookie
Stephanie Jones plating Malgeri who singled to left field to lead off the inning. The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Emerson took a 2-1 lead on a bunt single which allowed the runner on third to score. In the seventh, Emerson used four hits to score two more runs to jump out to a 4-1 lead before Ramapo scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the inning. Scarpelli belted her second home run of the day as she pinch hit in the seventh. The Roadrunners were unable to score again, falling 4-2.
Sophomore
Lauren Shaw took the loss for Ramapo, she recorded one strike out in the complete game.
Malgeri and Jones each went 3-6 with one RBI while Malgeri scored one run on the day. Scarpelli was 2-4 with two home runs while Wong was 3-7 with a double.
The Roadrunners continue action tomorrow when they go up against #3 Louisiana College at 1:00 PM. At the end of bracket play in the afternoon they will find out the time of their second game of the day which will be either 5:30 PM or 7:30 PM, depending on where they finish in pool play.
