Winter Haven, FL: After getting washed out of their scheduled season opener on Friday, the Ramapo College baseball team took on the Husson University Eagles in a quickly scheduled game this afternoon.
Mike Murano started for the Roadrunners, and promptly hit the first batter he faced in 2010. One out later, Murano and catcher
Michael McGuckin played strike em out, throw em out to end the Eagles threat in the top of the first. Ramapo got on the board early, manufacturing a run in the bottom half of the frame. Rookie
Jordan Greenberg led off with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a
Mark Ruggiero groundout, and scored on a
Joseph Della Serra ground out.
The Roadrunners tacked on two more in the third inning when Ruggiero drew a one out walk and Della Serra reached on an error before first baseman
Dan Moreno doubled to the right centerfield gap, plating the two baserunners. Husson tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Ramapo lead to one, 3-2. With the momentum hanging in the balance, Ruggiero drew a one out walk for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Pat Driscoll was sent to pinch run for Ruggiero, and scampered all the way to third on a pickoff attempt gone wrong. One out later, with Driscoll on third and Della Serra on second,
Dan Mauriello laced a single to score the two runs, making it 5-2 Ramapo.
The Roadrunners pitching made that lead stand up, as Murano lasted five and two thirds innings before being relieved by freshman
Travis Zilg. Zilg worked two and a third scoreless innings, striking out five.
John Guagliardo started the top of the 9th for Ramapo, and struggled with his control hitting a pair of batters and walking one, while recording just one out on a strike out.
John McNeil relieved Guagliardo, and induced a game ending double play groundball.
Every member of the Roadrunner starting lineup reached base at least once. Moreno and Mauriello drove in two runs a piece, while Della Serra scored a pair and knocked in one of his own.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow taking on MCLA in Winter Haven.
